We have been in talks with Torridge District Council who have received a considerable grant from the County Sports Partnership - Active Devon, to get those aged 55 and over more active.
The Connecting Actively to Nature scheme (CAN) is a new project that will focus on people aged 55 and above to get more active utilising the wonderful environment and outdoor opportunities that we have within our district.
The provision is for a 12 week programme of 1 session per week, which would run every Monday morning as with our monthly Young@Heart Adventure Club.
One of the key components of the scheme is to look at the longer term impact of getting people outdoors. With this in mind we are planning 5 sessions of the 12 to include kayaking on the river to help prepare individuals to be able to take to the water on their own following the course.
The participants will work through the British Canoeing – Start, Discover and Explore awards enabling individuals to build up confidence, skills and a sense of achievement.
But of course being in a tidal region the water isn’t always there when we want it, so for the other weeks we have a great mix of exciting activities and informative walks on offer.
Here’s our first programme that we are planning to run from the 6th May.
6th May River Kayaking
13th May Archery
20th May River Kayaking
27th May Appledore History Walk
3rd June High Ropes
10th June River Kayaking
17th June Hartland Walk - Ship Wrecks and Geology
24th June River Kayaking
1st July Surfski and Surfing
8th July Westward Ho! - Coastal Habitats
15th July Orienteering - Torrington Common
22nd July River Kayaking
Sounds exciting, but how much is it?
For the 12 week course the total cost to you is just £150, that’s just £12.50 per week.
What times do the sessions run?
Each week the session will start at 9am and will run through to 12.15pm.
But what’s the catch?
You need to commit to the 12 sessions to qualify for the funding.
You can either pay all up front, weekly or in three or six instalments. We want to make it as easy as possible.
How do I book?
To book your place call Skern Lodge on 01237 475992 or drop in. You will need to complete a form to register for the funding, but this can be done on the first session on the 6th May, just arrive 10 minutes early on that first day.
I can't commit to the full 12 weeks can I join just one or two sessions?
Yes you can, but you will not be eligible for the funding, so each session will be at the normal Skern rate of £25 per person and booked via Skern Lodge.
What can I do once the course has finished?
You can continue with taking part in a variety of outdoor activities with us at Skern on the Young@Heart Activity Club run the first Monday of every month. Alternatively you could continue your kayaking skills and join the local Bideford Canoe Club.
Maybe you could become a CAN ambassador and with all the new friends and connections you would have made, start your own walking or activity group or help recruit new candidates to the many different CAN projects being offered in the district.
